Worked example

The first word of each sentence capitalised, the rest lowercased — with abbreviations and acronyms left intact.

Input
the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog
Output
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

The rules

Sentence case lowercases the text and capitalises the first word of each sentence. Two details decide whether it works: abbreviations like "Dr." must not start a new sentence, and the text has to be split into sentences before it is lowercased — lowercasing first destroys the capitalisation that sentence detection depends on.

Every format

The same phrase in all twelve formats. The row marked with an asterisk is this page's format.
