Worked example
"How many characters is this?" has four correct answers, and most counters give the one almost nobody wants.
A three-person family emoji is one character to a reader and nine UTF-16 units to JavaScript. Here is the same emoji measured four ways:
| Measure | Result |
|---|---|
| Characters | 1 |
| Code points | 5 |
| UTF-16 units | 8 |
| UTF-8 bytes | 18 |
Why it matters
If you are filling a database column you want bytes. If you are filling a headline you want what the reader sees. A counter that reports String.length for both will tell you a three-person family emoji is nine characters long, which is true of the storage and useless for the writing.
