Worked example
A slug is lowercase, hyphen-separated and free of punctuation. The interesting question is what to do with everything outside A–Z.
A messy headline with accents, an ampersand and punctuation, turned into a URL slug:
- Input
Café & Bar: 10 Best Döner Spots in Köln!
- Output
cafe-and-bar-10-best-doner-spots-in-koln
| Unicode kept | cafe-and-bar-10-best-doner-spots-in-koln |
|---|---|
| ASCII only | cafe-and-bar-10-best-doner-spots-in-koln |
| Devanagari kept | नमस्ते-world |
Why it matters
The lazy answer is to delete it, which turns a Hindi headline into an empty slug. Unicode slugs are valid in URLs, readable to the people searching for them, and handled correctly by every current browser — so they are kept unless you ask for ASCII.
