Worked example
Google truncates by pixel width, not character count. Two titles of exactly 60 characters can differ by more than 300 pixels.
Two titles of exactly 60 characters — the length every SEO guide gives as the limit. One fits Google's budget comfortably; the other loses its last third.
| Title | Measured |
|---|---|
| Illicit Intimacies: A Film with Little Tiny Titles in It All | 60 chars / 453px |
| WOMAN AWARDED DAMAGES AFTER COMMON LAW MARRIAGE CLAIM, COURT | 60 chars / 772px |
| Desktop limit | 580px |
Truncated to: WOMAN AWARDED DAMAGES AFTER COMMON LAW
Why it matters
The 60-character rule is an average derived from average-width English text. A title of narrow letters fits seventy; a title of capitals and W's is cut at forty-eight. Measuring the actual rendered width is the only way to know, so widths here come from the real Arial font metrics Google serves on desktop.
